The Bronx Music Heritage Center (BMHC) is proud to announce the latest slate of “Rock the Bronx” summer concerts on the plaza outside the Bronx Music Hall (438 East 163rd Street). The series features emerging artists from the borough and the surrounding area that span various genres bringing a variety of new sounds to the South Bronx throughout the summer.

The series will be emceed by Marco Soccoli, a New York City music mainstay who played drums for the band, the Roxx, and managed the drum departments at Sam Ash Music and Manny’s Music on 48th street’s legendary music row. Soccolli also has deep roots in the music industry as he has worked as a representative for Vic Firth Drumsticks, D’Addario Strings, Regal Tip Drumsticks and Evans Drumheads providing gear for many musicians in the jazz, rock and Latin music scenes.

On Saturday, July 23, at 3 p.m., two women-fronted acts will pack the plaza. Francesca Lamantia Savoy from A Multitude of Drops will start the show. Lamantia and her band play both electric and acoustic music and formed in the Bronx in 2019. Then, Left in the Attic, another Bronx-based trio will perform their style of garage band rock. They feature Jacks on guitar, Crissy on bass, and Murphy on the drums. The band members met in high school and have been performing together since 2008.

On Sunday, August 21, at 3 p.m., singer-songwriter and performer, Duriex, will close the series. They will be joined by other performers to be announced later in the summer. Each performance is presented in partnership with The Underground FLC and The Fox and King. Seating in the plaza is limited, so attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs. In the event of inclement weather, the performances will move inside the Bronx Music Heritage Center, located at 1303 Louis Nine Blvd, at 4:30 p.m.

Events on the Bronx Music Hall plaza are free. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available on the BMHC’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bxmusic/.  For more information, call (917) 557-2354.

A major new exhibition at the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust has opened. The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do offers an expansive and timely presentation of Holocaust history told through personal stories, objects, photos, and film—many on view for the first time. The 12,000-square-foot exhibition features over 750 original objects and survivor testimonies from the Museum’s collection. Together, these objects tell a global story through a local lens, rooted in objects donated by survivors and their families, many of whom settled in New York and nearby places. The museum is located at 36 Battery Place, in Manhattan. For more information, visit mjhnyc.org or call (646) 437 4202.

In keeping with the Museum’s mission to educate people of all ages and backgrounds on the broad tapestry of Jewish life before, during, and after the Holocaust, the exhibition features countless beginnings, middles, and too many endings that make up the stories of The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do. Each room, and each object, contains generations of experiences and information about who Jews are, what sustains Jewish communities, and what life was like during the period of European modernization, World War I, and the political and social movements that brought about the rise of the Nazi Party. Within the Holocaust experiences of legalized racism and fascism, pogroms, ghettos, mass murder, and concentration camps are instances of personal and global decision-making, escape, resistance, and resilience, and ultimately liberation and new beginnings.

The center suffered severe damages due to the recent hurricane, and had intended to be open for regular after school programs in time for the beginning of the school year but was delayed during repairs. The center, located at 3636 Holland Ave, The Bronx, NY 10467, USA is open daily, Monday to Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Call 718-994-6378 for more information.

The Jewels of Cuban music: Multi-latin grammy award winners, Orquesta Aragon and El Septeto Nacional Ignacio Pineiro were due to perform at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, located at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, NY 10468, on Saturday, August 20, but Lehman has since informed us that this show has since been postponed. A new date will be announced. Orquesta Aragon are a popular charanga band hailing from Cuba. Their distinctive sound is based on traditional son with its African rhythm section and Spanish melodies, over which they added three violins. Orquesta Aragon were not only popular as interpreters of son, but are also credited with inspiring New York mambo. They can be heard performing on That Cuban Cha-Cha-Cha and in collaboration with Beny More and Perez Prado on Riverside Years. For more information on the new date, check back at: https://www.lehmancenter.org/orquesta-aragon.

Bronx Buccaneers football club meet on Saturdays in the Williamsbridge Oval, located at 3225 Reservoir Oval East, in Norwood from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Monday to Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Understanding there is more to football, the Buccaneers strive to develop the students/athletes, and the hope is that the players will use the program not only as a stepping stone to advance to upper level sports in High School and college, but also as a means to engage in positive behavior and as a healthy distraction from idleness which the group says can lead to poor decisions. The Buccaneers accept kids from any community, boys or girls, ages 6 to 14. Contact Tasha Andrews at (917) 662-3632 for further information. The group are also hosting a special event on July 30. More details to follow.

NYC Parks free, outdoor public pools have reopened on June 28, as reported. NYC Parks’ outdoor pools will remain open through Sunday, Sept. 11. Daily hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Operations will be adjusted as needed, based on daily lifeguard coverage to keep swimmers safe. NYC Parks officials said the agency has also, once again, installed sunscreen dispensers to provide free SPF 30 sun protection at outdoor pools and beaches.

Additionally, as reported, NYC Parks is also providing free breakfast and lunch at sites across the City, including schools, parks, pools and food trucks for all eligible children under the age of 18 via the Free Summer Meals program in conjunction with NYC Department of Education. No ID or registration is required. Visit Parks’ Outdoor Pools page for more information, and check out the Cool It! NYC map for cooling features in every neighborhood – including pools, spray showers, drinking fountains, and more.

Residents are reminded that sprinklers are also available from FDNY for street fire hydrants to allow some water to be sprayed onto the street, a practice which is legal, as confirmed to Norwood News by NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). However, leaving a fire hydrant open “full throttle” is illegal, since it may result in the FDNY being unable to respond to a fire if a fire hydrant is emptied. Blocking a fire hydrant is also illegal.

Elected officials, City agency partners, community-based organizations and foundations relaunched the citywide “Saturday Night Lights” program on Saturday, March 26 in Mott Haven. The groups work together to keep 100 gyms across the City open for free, high-quality sports programs for kids on Saturday nights, ensuring no indoor gyms are closed on these nights – the time when they are needed most by kids in city communities. Click on the following link to watch a video extract of the Saturday Night Lights Relaunch, where Mayor Eric Adams can be seen observing some of the kids in action.

Each Saturday evening, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., children and youth, aged 11 to 18, are able to enjoy an array of indoor sports, including basketball, soccer, volleyball, dance, martial arts and more. According to the organizers, a key component of the program is bringing cops and kids together. Teams of youth coordination officers from NYPD precincts are at each of the 100 gymnasiums every Saturday night, helping to coach, and joining members of various community based organizations to interact with young people and help make a lasting and positive impact in their lives.

Mosholu Montefiore Community Center, located at 3450 Dekalb Avenue, is the local venue for the program in Norwood, while the Fordham Heights program is run at 2255 Webster Avenue, Bronx, NY 10457.
